Self-esteem: how to build a kinder relationship with yourself

Self-esteem is frequently misunderstood. Many people believe that having self-esteem means thinking you're superior to others, being arrogant, or never feeling bad about yourself. In reality, healthy self-esteem is something far more subtle and profound: it's the ability to recognize your own worth in a stable way, regardless of what others think or how much you produce and achieve.

Where does low self-esteem come from?

Self-esteem begins forming in childhood, shaped primarily by how we're treated by the significant people around us — parents, caregivers, teachers, friends. Constant criticism, comparisons, emotional neglect, or environments where love was conditional on performance can create a very critical and demanding inner voice.

This "inner critic" is one of the main manifestations of low self-esteem: the voice that says "you're not good enough," "you're going to fail," "you don't deserve this." Over time, we come to believe this voice as though it's the truth — but it isn't.
